questions for a thriving 2008
hi friends and dear ones,
i hope you are all easing back into regular life after the holidays and enjoying the fresh beginning. :)
in assessing what i would like this new year to bring, i have narrowed down one important thing:
***i would like to find nationwide exposure for my artwork in 2008.
i want to work entirely for myself beginning THIS YEAR.***
this is a daunting task to consider (as many of you probably know firsthand), and it scares me just writing it down! (the judgment kicks in, my work isn't focused enough, good enough, other people are so much more talented, dedicated, organized, blah blah blah...)
so, i thought maybe a good start would be to just put it out there that i need some help. yep, good simple help. maybe asking for it will be just the kick-start i need to start attracting that help my direction.
so, i have some questions for you:

2. what is the best way to get started doing trade shows?
3. do you have any experience approaching magazines or any advice on how to go it?
4. do you have any experience with having your drawings/paintings/designs turned into patterns or designs for another company?
5. do you have any recommendations on shops or galleries where you think my work might fit?
6. do you know anyone who might want to carry my work?
i feel sort-of funny about posting this, because i am the type of person who has always liked to do everything myself. but i realize how limiting this is-- there is a wealth of information out there (aka: you all!) just waiting to be tapped into. how cool is that?

go you! i'm excited for you and am on the same path. what i really wanted to comment is-- you know hilary williams?! she's a friend & former co-worker and just as i was perusing your work i thought of how there was a connection to the way you both layer and the palette and then i saw her linked! crazy world!

Have you tried contacting Grace at Design*Sponge? I went to her SF Biz meet-up and she had spoke about a lot of these issues. She even created a word file, containing tips for some of this. I might have it some where and can send it to you. Regardless, send her an email. She is very nice and very knowledgeable.
Another idea, if you are you in Boulder? Is to walk into the galleries on Pearl Street or the Art district in Denver, with a beautifully designed card to give to the owners. Something that contains images of your work, snippets of your artists statement, stats of where you are currently showing, and basic contact info.
