VACATION!!

well, i'll be taking a mini blog break because i'm off to palos verdes, california tomorrow for ryan's brother's wedding (as well as some beach time!!), and i'm leaving my little over-worked computer here to get some love and attention at the apple store.

fun with sewing

i made this little turquoise clutch this afternoon to go with a dress i'm wearing to a wedding next saturday! the wedding is in fact ryan's younger brother's wedding, which means i'm off to california on tuesday morning! sunny beach, here i come...

anyway, i'm in love with the little clutch i made. every time i start sewing i wonder why i don't do it more often. perhaps this is the beginning...

i wanted to let you all know that my etsy shop has been updated! i decided ot list some of my monotypes (which are not on my website), as they are perfect for creating limited edition prints of. i would love love love to hear what you all think of them! i also added some gocco prints, and i will be adding more over the next few weeks! i am absolutely obsessed with gocco printing lately. anyway, make sure to check out my shop for some fun, affordable artwork! and as always, i would appreciate your comments on any and all of it. :)

playing with clay

my incredible artist friend caroline and i had some fun in her studio yesterday making clay bowls and trays from plaster molds that she made years ago and has had sitting in her basement untouched. i can see that clay could become very addictive for me. i just want to drop everything else when i'm working with clay.

it was so fun and inspiring!! and now i can't wait to see our creations when they're finished. {first we have to fire them, then glaze them, then fire them again...} i'll post photos of the finished pieces once we have them!

life is carbon: new favorite

while browsing simply olive this morning, i clicked over to her 'new favorite reads' section and found life is carbon, which has quickly become my new favorite, too! it is all about scandinavian aesthetics, which includes art, design, fashion, music, and other types of media (video, etc.)

now, i'm not generally all that passionate about fashion, but i was so taken by some of these photographs on the site. click here to check them out for yourself.

i'm not a plastic bag

i love this idea. what a great way to raise people's awareness without being nazi-ish about it or judging people for what they are or aren't doing. i have been using canvas bags for years to haul around groceries and other miscellanous things for which canvas bags are tres useful, but mine are certainly not designer bags-- they just have the boulder museum of contemporary art logo plastered on the front. i have a black one with a gigantic image of the earth on it, too!

but these bags= hip and trendy. and if all the cool kids are carrying them, well, you better believe everyone is going to want one. designed by anya hindmarch in london, they were launched in the uk to wild success, and just yesterday were launched in the US!

there are a couple of issues, though: 1) they are made in china (but they claim all the workers are paid minimum wage...) and 2) they are not organic cotton. hmmm..... but not wasting all those plastic bags that go directly into landfills means this is a step in the right direction. better than no step at all in my opinion.

nancy anderson and sweetbird studio

this is a post i'm very excited about: my next door studio neighbor has finally launched her website for her kick ass amazing work. nancy anderson of sweetbird studio creates jewelry and mixed media pieces from found objects and other gorgeous one-of-a-kind things. her work is truly stunning in person, and she just loves what she does. it has been so inspiring to be her next door neighbor the past 2 1/2 years. she's living the dream!

adorable paintings by sally white king

i was helping to hang a new show at exhibitrek gallery today (where my work is represented, by the way!!), and i absolutely fell in love with these bear paintings by sally white king. none of my favorites that i saw today were on her website, but there are a few images that give you the idea of the bears. i'll try to get some good photos at the opening on friday night.

also, a spot of good news: i was accepted into the annual juried show at space gallery in denver! so exciting. i'll post photos of that when i have them, too....

the 2007 periodic table of elements printmaking project

i am loving this project! organized by jennifer schmitt (azuregrackle.etsy.com), the project consists of over 85 printmakers from around the world each contributing a print about one of the elements on the periodic table.

i've always been sort-of intrigued by the periodic table, even though i'm not really the science-y type so much, so i think this is really such a great idea. i also really like the idea that ryan and i can both enjoy something for very different reasons! (me= art, ryan= science).

surgery + embroidery = oh so pretty

i can't even begin to describe how GORGEOUS these are in person. i ran into translations gallery today to take some photos of my tables that are for sale there, and i ran smack into these little exquisite wonders by lindsay obermeyer. i was enthralled, and i had quite literally only 2 minutes to be in the gallery before i had to jump in the car and be off to the next engagement of the afternoon. darn! i'll have to go back. i also spied some very intriguing fiber breasts on the wall... gotta check those out, too.

in lindsay's own words about her work: "my investigation into the intersections between the surgical and textile crafts began with my own struggles with cancer. i returned to this work in 2003 after an emergency appendectomy. the surgeon used a vertical mattress stitch to suture my abdomen. as an embroider I could not help but admire his needlework skill."

i am absolutely in awe of these pieces. what else can i say.
