daily painting: sometimes you have to make a bad painting in order to make the good paintings

ha ha! sometimes you have to make a really bad piece of work in order to let the good work come out. and instead of getting all distraught about it today, i thought it would be more beneficial to laugh about it and post it here! this daily painting is NOT for sale-- it is absolutely hideous. :)
i am going to paint over it just as soon as it's dry, but i wanted to post it here because i think it's important. and here's why:
everything you see on the internet is so finished and perfect and inspiring, and it can often feel defeating when you're sitting in your studio without an idea, or working on an ugly painting, or feeling like everyone else is more talented than you (ok, me.) the comforting part is that i am almost certain all artists go through these feelings at times, and it's nice to get a glimpse of it in others' lives. not that i wish ruts and bad paintings on other artists, but i like knowing that it happens to other people, too, because i know i'm not alone in my doubts and ups and downs and ugly, embarrassing work.
so, here's to making ugly paintings on fridays!!!!
i hope you all have a splendid weekend. i will have better daily paintings to show you next week. (i hope!!)

aww, i love the little purple elephant!
but i totally agree, it's good to share the ups and downs of creating art. not every piece is a masterpiece. it's all about playing, experimenting, and not being afraid to make something hideous because that's what leads to fabulous new stuff!
thanks for sharing!
i love that you shared this. i've spent hours creating something just to hate it in the end and trash it. it's just part of the process.
This is such a great post and I'm so glad you shared it. Its so true - I totally have days where nothing I make is how I'd like things and I'm so frustrated because I imagine others make great art easily all the time. Such a realistic, honest and cute post is awesome and comforting :)
I totally agree. I try to make the best pieces I can, but sometimes my mood, my will, my hands, think differently than my mind and sometimes the outcome is unexpectedly good or extremely bad. It also has to do with my limited talent, but I learn my lessons and improve everyday.
Thanks for sharing this
:)
Thank you guys!!! I'm glad to hear you can relate to this-- it means we're not alone!!
Perhaps I'll have to start sharing more of the hideous work I make along the way.... :)
xoxo
you are so sweet for giving me this gift. i seriously do this all the time. if i could honestly
quit comparing and worrying, i wouldn't have so many creative blocks. that fact that you shared this is huge. i just painted over two paintings to start over, one was the girl i just did for a commission. amen!
aww, kelly, i'm right there with you! if being an artist was easy all the time, then i don't think we'd love it as much. and isn't it sort-of liberating to paint over something you've created? get rid of it!! start over!!
jess, i can't even begin to tell you how much i love this post! it's all part of the process! you are such a rockstar.

Kelly, YOU are a rock star!! Thank you so, so much-- I really didn't want to post an ugly painting (read:my EGO didn't want to), but I felt it was important. I'm so glad you guys are getting something out of it!!!
That's so true!! I feel that way all the time! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing a "failure" (even though I think the elephant is actually really cute!) because it puts things into perspective!
Glad I could help, Mischa!
